Gray Whales Count
Gray Whales Count
Day 12
Saturday, February 28, 2015
A Great Observer (Egret) stalks the ground behind us during one of our two time outs for a bit too much wind.
The last day of February could have been mid-to-late March: sun, wind, whales, kiteboards, time outs, a Great Egret, and more whales taking us a bit past closing time to sort out the groups. There were lots of whales, even when there was too much wind. (We noted an off-effort Gray whale going north that could not be put on the Count board, plus six southbounders we hope to add to the Count when they head back north.)
There was also some weirdness … the only dolphin of the day was a single, Pacific White-sided dolphin doing lots of leaps (side-flops) that may have been an attempt to attract his buddies. If so, it didn’t seem to work. We did not see any others.
Peter Howorth, up to his eyeballs in rescued Sea lions, came to the Point to rescue yet another in a dubious-record year. Thanks to all those out there who care for these marine mammals very much in need.
