Gray Whales Count
Gray Whales Count
Day 24
Thursday, March 12, 2015
29 is our favorite number of the week. Of the last seven days we have found 29 northbound Gray whales on three of those days, including today. We started slowly, if anyone can say lots and lots of dolphins is a slow start. There was nothing slow about the Pacific White-sided dolphins (AKA Lags). About 60 spread out and charged east, leaving commons in their wake.
At 11:00 we sighted our first Gray whale with a group of six behind, that split into two groups: a foursome and a pair. Eleven groups followed across our vantage and our day, closing with a thousand (give or take a few) Common dolphins spread out across Goleta Bay and foraging and leaping west across Counter Point and around some thrilled Stand-Up-Paddlers.
We sighted two different Harbor seals about one thirty and Bottlenose dolphins at various times during the hot, windless day.
The weather is as crazy as the whale count.
