Gray Whales Count
Gray Whales Count
Day 13
Sunday, March 1, 2015
Over many years we have discussed a manner of the migration: the pulses of groups of whales that appear together and then we sit in the doldrums. On this morning, we experienced more of an explosion of whales: 8 groups of fifteen northbound Gray whales that were seen first in a jumble three miles out on a strikingly clear day (except for areas of glare). Throw in a Sea lion on the beach, Bottlenose dolphins, Common dolphins, Pacific White-sided dolphins, an unidentified southbound whale, and some sportfishing vessels and it was like ... well, yesterday afternoon, at the end of the day.
Wow.
In the rest of the day we had three sightings of four northbound Gray whales, and three sightings of four southbound Gray whales, with scattered Lags leaping about with Sea lions confusing the count of dolphins.
It was rainy out toward the islands and just plain beautiful from where we stood.
