Gray Whales Count
Gray Whales Count
Day 34
Sunday, March 22, 2015
We started at 9: flat calm; overcast; some haze; and a little dark — pretty nice. Right away, we found two Harbor seals and a Gray whale, right in front of us, going the wrong way. Southbound? No, not really. The whale was not going anywhere but the bottom to look for food. After about forty minutes, the whale headed off in the right direction for a northbound Gray whale.
It was the first of twenty-six today. We certainly slowed down a bit at mid-day when we thought we might be lucky to reach sixteen, but the whales rallied in the afternoon before the wind churned things up.
There were lots of Common dolphins punctuating the morning sea and in the afternoon a large group of about fifty Pacific White-sided dolphins was chopping the surface maybe better than the wind.
A lot of visitors asked about calves today. We are on the look out. Perhaps, next week.
