Gray Whales Count
Gray Whales Count
Day 43
Tuesday, March 31, 2015
Hey, lucky us ... a full day, some pretty fair observation quality (no fog), and eleven northbound Gray whales, including two calves, that brings us to eleven for the Count.
The calves were part of a double Cow/calf pair combination that started for us as anything but. They looked like maybe a single and a pair of southbound Gray whales. Strange.
They stumbled east for a time and surfaced short of Campus Point, then turned around and reformed as a tight foursome straight out from us and proceeded west along the “calf trail” bending towards the Ellwood kelp.
It was fun getting them untangled and headed in the “right” direction.
Two Harbor seals popped up on the east side of Counter Point and onto our datasheet.
There were no Lags, but a strong line of leaping Common dolphins paraded west two miles offshore. Four Bottlenose dolphins countered east trough the choppy sea.
