Gray Whales Count
Gray Whales Count
Day 15
Tuesday, March 3, 2015
No one minds a little extra time on an extraordinary day. We are seeing lots of groups of northbound Gray whales as well as a continuing stream (not quite a river) of southbound whales (actually, only two, today).
The northbound Grays were all over the place and sometimes very far east of us: the Counters who at times can’t quite believe what they are seeing are doing Great work. It is clear that experience counts. Thank you all!
Common dolphins were the flavor of the day and, they too, were all over the place, pretty much all day. One group of four Gray whales, travelled west about a mile and a quarter off shore with about a dozen Commons leading and in amongst the whales most of the way. We saw four dolphins surface and right behind there was a big blow from a whale: pretty funny looking group.
We went into overtime to be certain of the number in the literally-last-minute group of three that brought us to two dozen northbound Gray whales on the day. (And, this is the third of March! Extraordinary.)
It was nice to see Harbor seals a few times during the day.
