Gray Whales Count
Gray Whales Count
Day 17
Thursday, March 5, 2015
Another warm day with almost no wind, and, at times very good observation quality ...
And, we had a lot to see: Common dolphins, Bottlenose dolphins, and lags (our trifecta); again, two, distinguishable Harbor seals; southbound whales that were unidentifiable; and twenty-two northbound Gray whales.
For a brief, shining moment, or maybe a scratch-your-head moment, we thought we might have a first northbound calf for the year. Instead, it was a single juvenile, playing in the kelp and making the most of migration time. Perhaps, the only reason we thought it could possibly be a calf this early is that the year has been so unusual.
And, we are enjoying the unusual superfluity of Gray whales — in both directions —this winter.
