Gray Whales Count
Gray Whales Count
Day 55
Sunday, April 12, 2015
The morning belonged to dolphins: Commons, Lags, and Bottlenose. A highlight on Counter Point was when the real locals dropped in at Devereux to show us what surfing is all about, and that is having the most fun!
In the afternoon, we saw what the migration is all about: bringing new Gray whales into the world. Here a mother escorts her calf by Counter Point on its first migratory journey from lagoons on the Pacific side in Baja California Sür, Mexico to feeding waters off northern Alaska. While this is the fun part for us, it is a long, perilous swim for the young Gray whale.
There was only one Gray whale Cow/calf pair for us to Count today. We believe, however that Counters will become very busy in the next week.
