Gray Whales Count
Gray Whales Count
Day 71
Tuesday, April 28, 2015
This was more than anyone could hope for in sightings of Cow/calf pairs. Not much “low profile” today. We used up the word “extraordinary” yesterday. This ... all day, was extraordinary in spades, like a royal flush.
Whales were bold, fending off vessels charging through the kelp. Whales were quiet, tending to each other in intimate ways. They were social, bathing together in a big kelp pool west of Campus Point and passing in many groups of multiple pairs. There were more fountains than Rome.
The pair in the above image found a home in the shallow, clear water of Counter Point. The kelp was particularly to their liking, as both mom and her calf dove into the closet and came up draped with leaves.
The milk stained calf peeks over the back of mom as they move a bit west through the kelp in front of us. Extraordinary.
We Counted 13 pairs. Quite a full day.
