Gray Whales Count
Gray Whales Count
Day 45
Thursday, April 2, 2015
A full day in the sun and wind (just to remind us of where we are). The usual crowd was present: Pacific White-sided, Common, and Bottlenose dolphins, a Harbor seal, and northbound Gray whales.
A trio of Gray whales showed up just after ten. They were juveniles, one younger than the other two. And, that was it for whales until three. The blows were random, moving in no particular direction: blows in the kelp, along the kelp, heading east, and heading west. When we finally found mom, we could not find her calf until we did. Beautiful. Right in front of us. That was fortunate, too, because the glare was just ahead.
As this pair slipped into the sun-soaked sea, blows — big blow/little puff — were seen inside Campus Point. We soon realized it was two Cow/calf pairs, bouncing through the rather large chop. They, too, got lost to us in the glare, but they came together for parting blows outside the waves at Sands.
