Gray Whales Count
Gray Whales Count
Day 85
Tuesday, May 12, 2015
Instead of twenty-four Gray whales, today we counted four. We saw as many Humpbacks as Gray whale calves.
Our first sighting happened when we were setting up. The whales were west of the Point, and we were able to easily spot the calf, but mom was more elusive. Then, they both surfaced and all was right with our world, theirs too.
An instant before four we saw a big blow at Campus Point. Three surfacings later we saw the calf blow and show off a shiny head. Passing us, mom was much more visible, as in the image above.
We found a couple of Harbor seals , a small group of about sixty Common dolphins, and two sightings of a single Humpback whale.
