Gray Whales Count
Day 95
Friday, May 22, 2015
We cheered the arrival of the Biloxi Ghostbusters to save us from Oily Slick. Unfortunately, they couldn’t even tame the wind. Just before twelve we had a strong 5 Beaufort, heading to a 6, which not much later became a full-on gale.
We hung around to see if we might see some Gray whales on the chance that NOAA folks up the Channel might be able to maneuver the whales away from Oily Slick, if B. Ghostbusters were not successful.
and look what we found …
The Counter team of Annette and Ann saw the blow and confirmed the pair as an “off-effort” sighting at Campus Point, two miles east of us, with mountains of spray and white horses cluttering the field.
Those guys could probably do a better job than the Busters ...
Before we closed, we saw a pair of Bottlenose dolphins heading east. Of course, the oil is a huge tragedy, and a threat to all sorts of life. The whales are traveling through it, and we hope they avoid long-term affects. The dolphins and the pinnipeds and the fish and birds and plants have almost no way to avoid the oil.
This is where they live and die.
