Gray Whales Count
Gray Whales Count
Day 98
Monday, May 25, 2015
Today was our first zero-day for a full day of Counting since our third day, February 19. That’s quite a run. And, It was scheduled to be our last day. Instead, we are continuing because we want to be more certain; and, if there are whales, we want to at least document their passage through the oil spill.
There were lots of official people discussing the situation here on the Point. And, they looked a bit like the usual mix of shorebirds. The folks were from various agencies, including NOAA, USGS, California Fish & Wildlife, and US Fish & Wildlife, and maybe others.
They want to look at things from every angle; perhaps not as extreme as the upside-down Caspian Tern, but maybe more like one of the contorted gulls.
In addition to no whales of any species, we did see three Bottlenose dolphins heading west and our NOAA friends, set up at El Capitan, also saw three and we are going to compare images to see if maybe they were the same three.
We will be back on the Point tomorrow.
