Gray Whales Count

Day 03

Thursday, February 18, 2016

Here is something we don’t see every day: in the foreground is one of two northbound Gray whales traveling west, just outside the kelp and a bit past Counter Point; and, in the background is a single, southbound Gray whale, approaching our survey site from the west. The image-guy will tell you it was a planned picture, but we know better.

We will, however, accept it for what it is: a pretty good image of what we are seeing at the start of Gray Whales Count 2016: Gray whales migrating both ways (and pretty close to shore).

We were rain-shortened yesterday and not too surprised that wind pushed us off the Point at noon today.
