Gray Whales Count
Gray Whales Count
Day 04
Friday, February 19, 2016
If you are having trouble figuring out what it is you are seeing, we don’t blame you. What is there are intertwined flukes of juvenile Gray whales, adventurously traveling northbound and taking their own sweet time passing Counter Point. We can only guess at the postures below the surface. We do not expect to see this kind of action — and this close — until April with the moms and calves.
It was very fun in a fun-filled day of nineteen northbound whales, and that was with a final hour of not even seeing anything, not even a sea lion. Weird.
But fun.
Earlier, we saw a large group of Bottlenose dolphins that began as 3, then four, then four-plus-a-calf (5), then seven, nine including a calf (final), but it could have been twelve or fifteen. (We had to return our attention to the whales the dolphins were surrounding.
Only moderate wind amidst sunshine helped us put in a full, delightful, day.
