Gray Whales Count

Day 26

Saturday, March 12, 2016

We were setting up early because the wind was already strong, continuing to push yesterday’s storm out of the area. There was a blow from a young Northbound Gray whale right in front of us.

Twenty minutes later we saw a blow much further out. It was likely a Humpback whale. It did not seem to be headed west; at least we did not see it again and could not identify it.

Closer to us, we saw an otter on his back pushing through the chop and swell. The gull entourage was trying to keep up against a very strong wind.

Before we called it a day, we saw a group of eight Pacific White-sided dolphins splashing west. It helped put a smile on our faces while we prematurely packed up our survey site.
