Gray Whales Count
Gray Whales Count
Day 66
Thursday, April 21, 2016
The mother/calf pair above may look a bit like a Push-me, Pull-you version of Nessy, but they are Gray whales going in opposite directions inside the kelp in front of us. Momma had been nursing her calf, when she may have been startled by a surfer who broke from the line-up at Devereux to check the awesome site.
The pair had been moving west very close to us. They turned around traveling east to the place they originally crossed though the kelp when they were approaching Counter Point. There, they turned into the kelp going south, then west again along the outside of the kelp.
As odd as it was, they managed the re-route masterfully.
Our only dolphin sighting was a trio of Bottlenose loping east about where the above whales are pictured.
The morning was calm, clear, and colorful. Unfortunately, we did not see any otters of Harbor seals. The wind started to build about 1 PM with small, scattered whitecaps that became numerous big whitecaps that caused us to cut our effort short.
Below, our last Cow/calf pair on the day display some effort breathing into the growing blow from the west ...
