Gray Whales Count
Gray Whales Count
Day 71
Tuesday, April 26, 2016
The biggest and best thing for us was a full day plus, with no detrimental wind. For most of the day, there was nary a whitecap. Nice.
The second best thing — pretty big, too — was that we saw lots of whales, as the image conveys. These whales (two mothers escorting their calves) traveled so close together for a long time after passing the kelp. Fortunately for us, they were in line along the kelp and we could clearly see each mom and calf. It is probably nice to be hanging together after the ferocious winds they encountered yesterday.
We had several bunches of pairs today. Interesting.
There was also a curious incident ... A pair was traveling a couple hundred meters off the kelp as they passed us heading west, when they almost ran into a phalanx of approximately one hundred fifty California sea lions porpoising east. We never saw the whales after that.
Maybe the disappearance had nothing to do with a reaction to the sea lions, but it did get us wondering?
We also saw, in the morning, a large group of Common dolphins traveling west. Two groups of three Bottlenose dolphins passed close by the Point, in the surf zone. There was also a Harbor seal in the surf zone and one resting in the isla Vista kelp.
No sea otter today.
