Gray Whales Count
Gray Whales Count
Day 73
Thursday, April 28, 2016
Our first sighting occurred as we were setting up. We have had some practice these past few days, as the calf migration is chugging along at pretty-much full speed in spite of very strong winds opposing their journey north.
Once again, kelp is in fashion over carefully applied milk. Another mother/calf pair is also evident splashing just beyond. And, there was a third pair in the sighting, moving forward beyond the image frame.
Bird migrations are affected as well as the Gray whale migration. Loons, in their familiar non-formation grouping, are passing by the whales. A moment earlier, a group of about fifteen Brants passed between the whales and Counter Point. All are heading northbound (west along our coast.)
Our second-and-last sighting was a pair of mother/calf pairs that made the Count before a 25+ knot wind closed us down for the day. In the brief hour and two minutes, we added ten whales, however we did not see any other marine mammals.
