Gray Whales Count
Gray Whales Count
Day 74
Friday, April 29, 2016
As a bird approaches, the mother/calf pair is an easy target traveling very, very slowly past Counter Point.
We put in a full day with only a little wind at the end. Very nice! And, it was a diverse species day that included an Unidentified Large Whale that we believe was a Minke whale. We have only sighted a Minke at Counter Point once before, several years ago. We saw this whale twice, pretty far out, and for not much time: couldn’t be certain, but fun.
All our dolphin species, Bottlenose, Common, and Pacific White-side were present, if not in big numbers. Large groups of California sea lions roamed back and forth throughout the day, while Harbor seals seemed to be playing musical kelp chairs.
Unfortunately, we did not sight an otter, but we added five Northbound Gray whales, including two calves, passing Counter Point for the first time.
