Gray Whales Count
Gray Whales Count
Day 75
Saturday, April 30, 2016
Six whales on this full day without appreciable wind. (Do we ever appreciate wind?) There were four northbound Gray whales, mother calf pairs that did not spend too much time at the surface.
The other whales were interesting, intriguing, indecipherable, and indistinguishable. Actually, the first is in the image out near the oil platform. It is a young Humpback whale that the Condor Express also saw. They had seen this same whale a couple of weeks ago; and, they believe it to be a first year calf that was weaned by its mother and is now on its own, seemingly doing quite well.
The remaining whale blew a perfect, V-shaped blow at Campus Point, right where we would expect a cow/calf pair to appear before heading at us. We waited for the next blow, with a little blow from the calf. Nada. We waited and waited: no whale(s) coming our way. Disgruntled, we entered the “sighting” as ULBBW (Unidentified Large Bizarre Baleen Whale). We probably have had some in the past, but this is the first this year.
No dolphins today. There were two Harbor seals, and our otter was around to witness the strangeness.
