Gray Whales Count

Day 51

Wednesday, April 6, 2016

It was beautiful, sunny with glassy calm seas, until it wasn’t. The breeze came up and we could no longer see the oil platform Holly: fog. But, we did get in a good day in the transition from general migration to Mother/calf migration.

We saw the same number of Gray whales as yesterday; the difference today is half were calves. The sparkly calf above is pausing for refreshment in the kelp just east of Counter Point.

Lags (with sea lions) were back, along with Bottlenose and Common dolphins. We could not find an otter until late in the day. Harbor seals were resting in the kelp in the morning.
