Gray Whales Count

Day 92

Tuesday, May 17, 2016

In three months we have sighted just under fourteen-hundred northbound Gray whales. In less than an hour this morning, we saw at least twice that number of Common dolphins. The first group was mostly in a “Parade Line,” following one another in a mad-dash west. They were followed bt two miles of dolphins in a braod “Chorus Line,” shoulder to shoulder, also charging west.

This El Niño year, we have seen lots of groups of Common dolphins; however, instead of the more normal group sizes of 250, 500, and multi-thousands, most of our 2016 groups have been 100 or less ... until this morning.

The Gray whales calves are not charging by like the dolphins, but two Mother/calf pairs passed by today.

We saw a few groups of Bottlenose dolphins and a Harbor seal
