Gray Whales Count

Day 84

Monday, May 15, 2017

At one o’clock sharp, on a shift change, momma escorted her calf around Campus Point and became the first Gray whales we have seen since Saturday. A half-hour later, they were in the kelp (above) in front of us. Unfortunately, a half-hour later, the wind, which had been steadily building, became a Beaufort 5; and we were finished for the day, with our lone
pair for the day.

We also saw another line of Common dolphins, but it did not appear to be as many dolphins as yesterday.

It is becoming evident that this is not as productive a year as 2016, which was exceptionally high. Perhaps we will have a rush in the coming days ...

Even if we do not, our calf total to date will stand as a good, raw total, which, through analysis, will likely produce a very satisfactory estimate.
