Gray Whales Count
Gray Whales Count
Day 85
Tuesday, May 16, 2017
At just after nine we saw our 209th Gray whale Mother/calf pair to bring our total to one thousand fifty northbound Gray whales for the survey. The calf has a signature white dot near the dorsal hump.
At about four thirty we saw our first Blue whale of Blue Whales Cou ... er... Gray Whales Count 2017. It is highly unusual for us to see a Blue whale. Usually we are finished with our survey when they come into the Santa Barbara Channel; and, when they do arrive they are on the south side of the Channel and feeding near the islands.
Truly a special experience! And, we are truly happy the parade of Gray whale calves continues. (Had the forecast-wind developed, we might not have seen anything.)
